“What really knocks me out is a book that, when you’re all done reading it, you wish the author that wrote it was a terrific friend of yours and you could call him up on the phone whenever you felt like it. That doesn’t happen much, though.”

J.D. Salinger, The Catcher in the Rye

La Mercerie

March 2016, Paris

Dear Áine,

The trench is the coat of the month in March—warm but not too warm. Two buttons popped off mine somewhere between my house and Sylvie’s hair salon. She advised a trip to a certain haberdashery (called a mercerie in French) up by Moulin Rouge. It’s the fabric district, as well as the red-light district. She handed me a hand-drawn map. No one seems to know addresses or street names, or even shop names. We all just feel our way down alleyways and through memory banks. According to the map, I was to start from Moulin Rouge, go up one street, turn right, turn left, and look for a red shop with the word “mercerie” in the title. This was beginning to be less of an errand and more of a treasure hunt. After a few wrong turns and some backpedaling, I found the store—and buttons! An entire wall dedicated to buttons—silver, gold, ceramic, shell, and a rainbow of plastic buttons to solve any and all fashion emergencies. A matte silver caught my eye. It wasn’t similar to the others already on my coat so I changed them all—18 buttons to sew that night. Now when I wear my trench I feel a bit like a glitterati of the fashion industry. I might have to re-button all my coats.
